The Centro de Recolha Oficial de Animais (CROA) is Porto’s modern, official animal collection and adoption centre.

Adoption visits require prior booking.
Day Time
Monday–Friday 13:30 – 15:30
Saturday 11:00 – 16:30
Guided tours of the facilities happen on the first Saturday of every month at 11:00, 13:30, and 15:30 – also by appointment!

Adoption from CROA is completely free and includes everything your new cat needs to start a healthy life:

WHO CAN ADOPT?
Anyone can adopt from CROA – you do not need to be a resident of Porto municipality.
WHAT TO BRING
If you decide to adopt on the day (which you can!), remember:
- Your ID (Citizen Card or other official document)
- A carrier or transport box to take your new cat home safely
- A collar and lead (if applicable)
BEFORE YOU ADOPT – THINK CAREFULLY
Adopting a cat is a wonderful decision, but it’s also a long-term commitment. Ask yourself:
Space – Do you have enough room for a cat to explore and feel safe?
Time – Can you give daily attention, playtime, and care?
Finances – Can you cover food, vet visits, and ongoing costs?
Emotional readiness – Are you prepared to care for a cat for its whole life, without expecting anything in return?
If the answer is yes to all of these, you’re ready to adopt!
OTHER OPTIONS – CAT CAFÉ
O Porto dos Gatos is a unique cat café in the Bonfim neighbourhood where you can meet resident cats available for adoption.
Location: Av. de Rodrigues de Freitas 93, 4300-466 Porto
Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 12:30–19:30 (closed Sunday & Monday)
Enjoy vegan food while getting to know cats in a calm environment – and if you connect with one, you can adopt responsibly!
